Karnataka Police resorted to open fire at injuring two of the six accused in the disturbing viral video of sexual assaults of a girl on Friday.
According to police, the six accused were being taken for a “spot visit” to reconstruct the crime scene in the capital city of the southern India state Bengaluru where they were arrested, when the accused attacked them and attempted to escape.
“Police were forced to fire at the accused. Police fired on the legs of the accused. Open fired by Inspector Melvin and Sub Inspector Arvind for self-defense,” a statement from the Bengaluru state police mentioned.
The shootout happened at around 5 am in the dawn and the two accused have incurred injuries to their legs that have been treated in a hospital.
Six persons including two women were arrested in connection to the disturbing video that had been making rounds in social media in which four men and a woman were seen sexually assaulting a young girl inside a well-lit room while loud music was playing in the background to muffle the victim’s wails. They shoved their feet and whiskey bottle inside her private parts besides stripping, beating and choking her.
A case of rape and sexual assault was lodged in the Ramamurthy Nagar Police Station in Bengaluru.
In the initial investigation, the victim was believed to be someone from northeastern part of India due to similarity in her physical traits with the indigenous people here, but on Thursday night, Bangladesh police in a media interaction there confirmed the victim, along with one of the assailants, are actually from the neighbouring country.
Assam Police had taken suo moto cognizance into the incident, Meghalaya Police and Mizoram police were also alerted and Union Minister of State for Youth and Sports Affairs Kiren Rijiju along with other leaders have shown concerns about the same.
Bengaluru police on Thursday night apprehended the prime accused 26-year-old Ritaful Islam Hriday alias Tiktok who, according to police reports was involved in human trafficking along with the other four — Baba Sheikh, Sagar, Akheel and a woman (name not verified yet) — who also featured in the 3.45-minute video. Another woman involved in the incident has also been arrested.
According to a source in the police, the accused had sexually assaulted the girl in Kerala, and then, they had moved to Bangaluru.
Bengaluru police without disclosing the victim’s whereabouts said that she is in another state and they have sent a team to rescue her.
Bangladesh Police said that they have confirmed with the victim’s family that she is from Mau Bazar area of Bangladesh and had been missing since the past two years.
“She wanted to go to Saudi Arabia and that’s why she had accumulated some money and left home. She hadn’t been in contact since then. We have reasons to believe that is when she got involved with the trafficking racket,” Bangladesh police said.
The assault on her was believed to be due to a payment-related dispute, Bengaluru police added.
