65-year-old rape and murder accused shot on leg while “attempting to escape”, sixth such instance within three weeks

In yet another incident of custodial shooting, a 65-year-old rape accused was on Friday shot on both legs after police said he made an attempt to escape.

This is the sixth incident of such shooting in the span of three weeks that began with the prime accused in the double rape and murder case of two sisters in western Assam’s Kokrajhar district who were found hanging from a tree branch, Farizul Rahman was shot on leg last June 17 when police said he made an attempt to escape by attacking a police constable.

Four more such incidents followed on June 22, 24, 26 and 29 before this.

Syed Ali, a junab (Muslim cleric) in Bhuragaon of Morigaon district also took police for “recreation of scene of the crime” on Friday and made an attempt to escape, police said.

“One Syed Ali, accused of rape and murder of a minor girl at Bhuragaon, Morigaon district while being taken for reconstruction of the scene of crime tried to escape under the garb of answering nature’s call. Morigaon Police had to use lawful minimum force to prevent escape,” Assam Spcl. DGP (law and order) GP Singh tweeted on Friday.

He further added, “He has been injured with bullet injury in the knee and taken to hospital for treatment.”

Ali was accused of some very serious charges. He was accused of raping and murdering a nine-year-old girl and then attempting to bribe her parents with Rs 3 lakh.

Prima facie evidence also suggests intercourse with the corpse, otherwise called nacrophillia, conducted by Ali who was arrested on June 20.

Ali is currently undergoing treatment at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital in Assam capital city about 100 kms from the place of the incident.

On June 22, a drug dealer Safikul from whose possession 1,77,000 unprescribed tablets and Rs 26 lacs were recovered at Guwahati was shot when he tried to escape from police custody. He was too admitted to GMCH with grievous injury

Spcl. DGP Singh had congratulated saying, “Well done Guwahati Police to have prevented a hardened criminal from escaping. We should keep the noose tight.”

Later, on June 24, an alleged cattle smuggler in western Assam’s Barpeta district, on June 26, a multiple robbery accused Saidul Islam in Dhubri district of western Assam and on June 29, a kidnapping accused Raj Babu Singh in Morigaon district were also similarly shot at when, police said, they attempted to escape.

All of the accused had incurred serious to grievous injuries.
