A COVID patient flees Quarantine in Tripura, suspected to have gone Bangladesh

Making things worse for northeast’s Tripura that is already knee-deep in its battle against COVID, a 22-year-old COVID positive patient had on Saturday fled from a quarantine center in South Tripura.

The patient, who had a travel history from southern India’s Tamil Nadu capital, Chennai, who was not found in the quarantine center, was suspected to have fled to neighboring Bangladesh with two other youth.

Tripura education minister Ratan Lal Nath, in his regular update on the COVID situation on Saturday, had said that the patient who was kept at Manu Bazar COVID Health care center in Sabroom sub-division of South Tripura, about 145 kilometers from the state capital Agartala, have come to his notice after the medical officer of the center informed on Saturday morning.

After that Dr. Debojyoti Majumder in charge of Manu Bazar, Gramin Hospital lodged a complaint against that youth in Manu Bazar police station.
According to the complaint, “The three youth from Manu Bazar area of Sabroom went to Chennai for livelihood a few years back where they worked in a hotel. Due to the pandemic situation on 31 May, they returned to Tripura by train. Of the three, one was tested COVID positive. The test report came on 3rd June.”

On arrival at the Agartala rail station on May 30, they were advised to stay in the home quarantine for 14 days.

“But in that time they fled from Tripura and went to Bangladesh,” a source in the police said. Sabroom shares a porous border with Bangladesh.

The local people said that they were seen at Sabroom town on June 3 also. But after that, they were not seen there.

The health staff tried to trace the missing youth since June 4 all most every possible place.

Minister Nath, had also said that three persons, tested COVIOD positive were also said to have jumped quarantine in Sepahijala district but were later found.

“One was caught while jumping home quarantine while the other two were misreported,” Nath said.
