“Arunachal-Assam Bonhomie Is Historic”- An IPS Gets Candid

-Robin Hibu

I have taken up with the DGP Assam Police, Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta IPS personally the incident of one Arunachal man from along Limo Ete who was harassed on his way to visit his ailing father at Guwahati Hospital. He had informed me of the pathetic incident.
He was allegedly ill-treated by some cranky cop. I immediately requested DGP Assam to take action against the Policeman and instantly he has ordered an enquiry on the incident. I have appraised DGP Assam on large complaints of Arunachal Pradesh people being harassed while driving in Assam.

I would request other kind-hearted social workers like Bimal Gogoi, to continue with state coordination meetings for such irritant harassment by police, or other authorities.
Proper consultation before meeting Assam Police with Arunachal civil society organizations like Transport Associations, Chamber of Commerce, Student Unions, Women Organizations, etc for proper ventilation of our problems with Assam Police must take place.
During my time as SP & DIG, I used to invite neighbouring state of Assam’s district SPs, OCs of the Assam-Arunachal bordering area for coordination meetings, followed by local traditional picnics at the riverside and used to honour Assam Police with traditional gifts.
We even used to have bonhomie singing antakshri competitions during picnics.
Vividly I remember hosting one such party for the present DGP Assam the venue of which was Banderdewa PTC. The party was preceded by a coordination meeting between Assam Police and Arunachal Pradesh officials.

We always used to greet them on Bihu, I always made it mandatory for my OCs or Check Gate’s Incharges to have a close personal liaison with their counterparts of Assam.
Even motivated local MLA like late Ngurang Pinch used to host feasts at river banks by inviting all DCs and SPs of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. He had organized numerous such memorable picnics at river bed at Kimin.

Such inter-state coordination meetings helped both states in promoting peace and brotherhood in sensitive inter-state border areas, apart from sharing crimes related information.

I feel so proud that one of the finest IPS officers of Assam cadre Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta is heading the Assam Police, he has taken a lot of initiatives for modernization of Assam Police, his initiative for starting state of the art Cyber Forensic is indelible, – I have suggested DGP Assam Bhaskar Mahanta Sir, to develope this institute into Regional Cyber Forensic Laboratory for all North East States.

We need to continue this innovative strategy for peace and progress of both states of Assam and Arunachal.
After all, Arunachal has always had a special relation with Assam, as they were the pioneers who came to the hills for educating us and whose icon Bhupen Hazarika’s love for Arunachal is immortal. I salute all those Assamese pioneers who dared to come to the Arunachal hills for the sake of our future, lest we forget them.
My homage to all those Assamese teachers, administrators, babus who loved us, guided us for a better tomorrow.
