A video went viral on social media where a group of youth was seen assaulting a police constable in Makum area of Tinsukia district for asking them to wear face mask.
On Tuesday, Tinsukia police detained the three attackers and started interrogating them. The three arrested youths have been identified as Bhaskar Gohain, Kiran Gohain and Kaushik Gohain, all residents of Laipuli.
On Monday at around 3pm, Mayur Ranjan Das, an on-duty police constable of the Makum-based 2nd Assam Police Battalion (APBn) was assaulted by a group of six unruly youths near a roadside eatery when he asked them to wear face masks.
The youths who were said to be in an inebriated condition at that time took umbrage at his remarks and landed a vicious attack on him.
A video of the assault which was taken by an unidentified person on his cellphone later went viral in which the youths can be seen kicking, slapping and hitting the constable. The policeman who remained unprovoked is later seen quietly leaving the place riding his motorcycle.
Tinsukia SP Debojit Deuri said, “Such attacks on police personnel won’t be tolerated. We have detained three accused from Laipuli area and the rest of the culprits will be in our custody soon.”
“Many unruly youths are seen roaming the streets during the lockdown period. The youth should know the gravity of the situation. Due to Covid-19, the restrictions were imposed by the government to curb the Covid-19 infection. The people should follow the guidelines of Covid-19,” said a local resident.
