Four persons went missing while five safely managed to swim across after a boat capsized on the river Brahmaputra in Rohmoria Balijan in Chabua of Dibrugarh on Sunday.

Sources said the accident took place in the middle of the river Brahmaputra.

The accident took place while 9 persons were coming from Mohmara to Balijan by a sail boat ( Tulunga boat).

Five people managed to swim across while four are still missing.

The missing persons are identified as Shankar Yadav, 53, Thunku Kurmi, 49 Dharmen Das, 50, and Kishan Yadav, 18.

The boat turned into two pieces due to the accident.

“They moved from Phoolbagan chapori to Balijan Ghat to sell milk. There were nine of them in the boat, five of them managed to swim and save their lives. Due to heavy current in the river others might have drowned,” said an official.

He said, “NDRF and SDRF teams have started their rescue operation. The police officials and district officials reached the spot,”.

Meanwhile, Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu reached the spot to take stock of the situation.
