Assam: Dreaded robber shot on leg while escaping police custody, admitted in hospital

A robbery accused was shot in the leg by police when he allegedly attempted to escape custody in Dhubri district of western Assam on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday.

This is the third instance of police encounter this month after the dreaded multiple murder-accused Bubu Konwar was shot dead last Wednesday and the prime accused in Kokrajhar double rape and murder case Farizul Rahman was shot on the leg when he attempted to escape last week. Rahman however survived.

Police said, Saidul Islam, who was arrested in connection to multiple robbery cases at Hatipota village in Chapar subdivision last Thursday, had attempted to escape custody.

Islam is accused of leading a team of five other accomplices that had robbed off cash and expensive gold and silver jewelleries from at least two houses in Hatipota village on May 26. While the rest of his team members were arrested soon after, Islam got caught into police net last Thursday.

On being apprehended, Islam told police about certain evidences left at the crime scene and after he took them — two teams from Chapar and Salkocha police stations — there, he made an attempt to escape.

“Our officials had warned him according to protocol and then, had to open fire. A bullet pierced through his leg. He was immediately rushed to Chapar Civil Hospital where he is undergoing treatment,” a police said.

Police said, Islam was involved with several armed robbery cases and had been in and out of jail.

A similar incident happened in Kokrajhar district in western Assam’s Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) when Farizul Rehman, who was accused in the rape and murder of two sisters who were found hanging from a branch of a tree last week, had attempted to escape by taking a police team to the crime scene in guise of showing evidences and made an attempt to escape. He, however, was shot at his leg and survived with minor injuries.

Last Thursday, another seasoned criminal Babu Konwar, who had over 42 police cases in connection to several high profile murders, car lifting, extortion, kidnapping, arms dealing and drugs smuggling, was killed in a police ambush at Sivasagar district of Upper Assam.
