Assam: Main accused of Batadrava police station arson case died in “road accident”

The main accused in the Batadrava police station arson case died in a road accident when he tried to flee from the police vehicle on Monday, claimed Nagaon police.

The accused have been identified as Ashiqul Islam.

Police claimed that Ashiqul Islam tried to jump out of a police vehicle when he got hit by another police vehicle that was just behind.

Nagaon Superintendent of police Leena Doley said, “yesterday we arrested the main accused Ashiqul Islam who was involved in the Batadrava police station arson case. During interrogation, he admitted that he had kept arms in his house. We have seized one 7.62 pistol, one .22 pistol, and seven numbers of ammunition from his house. We have also seized the red T-shirt from his house,”.

“When he was taken back to the police station, he tried to flee from the police vehicle and got hit by another police vehicle which was just behind. We have rushed him to hospital where doctors declared him brought dead,” Doley said.

Police have arrested 11 persons so far in connection to the arson case at Batadrava police station by a mob following the alleged custodial death of a fish seller Safiqul Islam.

On May 21, an irate mob at Batadrava in the Nagaon district of Assam vandalized and set the Batadrava police station on fire, following the “custodial death” of a fish trader.
