Assam man on missing 2nd dose of Covaxin due to shortage seeks scientific explanation from govt

56-year-old Manobendra Chakraborty of Silchar on Wednesday wrote a letter to Cachar Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli seeking scientific explanation after losing his second dose of Covaxin.

“Due to non-availability of Covaxin I and my wife could not administer the second doze of Covaxin within stipulated time. It is necessary to mention that the administration was well aware about the citizen who took first doze and it was the primary responsibility to arrange the second doze within stipulated time period,” Chakraborty stated in the letter.

Speaking to Newsmove on Wednesday over phone, Manobendra Chakraborty said, “I need scientific explanation from the government after my due date was missed due to non-availability of Covaxin. The district administration has failed to arrange the second doze and who is responsible if something happens to the citizen after expiring the first doze. They should come out with SOP or clearly explain the citizens.”

Chakraborty said, “Due to the heavy shortages of Covaxin in Barak valley, everybody’s life has been at risk. The government have all the dates and they knew that the citizens have to take the second doze on that particular date, then why they failed to arrange the second doze. Due to their failure why will the citizens suffer.”

“I don’t know whether I will take the second doze or not because already the time frame has expired. Considering the fact enumerated above it is apprehended that after expiry of the administering second doze within scheduled time scheduled efficacy of the first doze is already jeopardised,” Chakraborty added.

He further said, “I have already twitted to Prime Minister, Health Minister and Chief Minister of Assam seeking their explanation about the matter. Their is a SOP for Covishield vaccine that after the first doze, the second doze will be given after 84 days but in terms of Covaxin their is no such date. I urged the government to clear the doubts of the citizens.”

However, there is a huge shortage of Covaxin in Assam and due to that many people are missing the deadline for the second doze.

Several senior citizens, who are most vulnerable to Covid infection, have missed the second dose of the Covaxin vaccine.

Assam Health Minister Keshab Mahanta admitted that their is a shortage of Covaxin in Assam but within this week Assam will receive 50,000 Covaxin.
