Serchhip Battalion of headquarter 23 Assam Rifles under the aegis of headquarter Inspector General Assam Rifles (East) recovered arms and ammunition from the jungle area of Zote in Mizoram on Sunday.
One AK-56 rifle with three empty magazines and one 9mm pistol were recovered from the jungle area.
The operation was carried out by a team of Assam Rifles and Customs Department, Champhai district based on specific information.
The arms and ammunition which were seized during the operation were taken by Custom department, Champhai.
“We have started investigation regarding the matter. The operation was jointly conducted after getting specific information. Our operation against illegal activities will go on,” said an official of Assam Rifles.
The official further said that the ongoing smuggling of illegal goods is a major cause of concern for the state of Mizoram.
Assam Rifles, rightly christened as the ‘Sentinels of Northeast’ have been successful in launching such operations against the smuggling activities in Mizoram.
