Assam: Three food delivery agents in Guwahati police’s net for peddling drugs after night curfew

The agents of online food service platforms Swiggy and Zomato are delivering more than just foods.

The Guwahati Police Commissionerate in Assam capital had on Monday arrested three such delivery agents along with narcotics.

Of the three agents — Subhankar Sarkar (20), Brojen Das (21) and Gayatri Roy (40) — Brojen was engaged with the Swiggy, said a city police officer.

The raid was conducted by city’s Paltan Bazar police station at South Sarania, one of the posh areas at the heart of the city.

“13 nos containers containing suspected brown sugar weighing 6 gm has been recovered from the three. Their hoises have also been searched for other incriminating materials,” police said.

Brown Sugar is a morphine-based lesser refined and lesser potent version of Heroin.

The food delivery agents have an advantage as they are excluded from the night curfew that is in place throughout the state due to COVID-19.

City police said that they had prior information of a drug peddling network operating through these food and other essential door to door service providers.

“We had inputs regarding these agents peddling drugs and have been observing their activities for wuite sometime,” police said.

Efforts are on to bring in the whole racket of peddlers. The three will be presented to Kamrup (Metro) Chief Judicial Magistrate during which, police will request for custody to question them.
