Assam: Two under trial criminals fled from a COVID hospital after detected infected

Two seasoned criminal on Tuesday fled custody from JSB Hospital in Kajalgaon, district headquarters of Chirang in western Assam’s Bodoland Territorial Region where the duo were shifted after they were detected with COVID-19 infection.

Jarif Ali, 32 and Biswajit Ray, 35, had fled the Hospital by breaking the lock of the room where the duo were contained.

Ali, who had a rap sheet was arrested for allegedly siphoning fuel from Oil Tankers while Ray was arrested for allegedly stealing water pumps distributed by the Public Health Engineering department.

Though the duo were accused of different cases, they both shared cells at Dhaligaon Police Station about 7 kms from Kajalgaon, for a brief period when Ali was taken for six days police remand.

His modus operandi was to steal fuel from running Oil containers on trains and was charged with several sections of IPC and Petroleum Act. He was detected with COVID-19 at Dhaligaon Police Station where a case (155/21) is going on against him.

Ray, on the other hand, was arrest along with three other ar Dhaligaon police station, but, was detected with COVID-19 while two of his accomplices have been forwarded to judicial custody.

Police said Ray fled along with the handcuff that tied his hands.

“A massive search operation has been initiated against the duo. When apprehended, they will be charged under Epidemic Act too,” police said.
