Child Rights Commission visit districts of Assam to review situation of Covid-19 affected children

A team of Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights comprised of Dr Sunita Changkakati, Chairperson and Rupa Hazarika, Member visited the districts of Dibrugarh, Jorhat and Nagaon to review the situation of Covid affected children from June 30 to July 2, 2021 respectively to take stock of the situation of children infected with Covid-19 in these districts.

The team interacted with the Principal and Superintendent of Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh, the Joint Director, Health and Family Welfare, the Nodal officer for Covid affected children, pediatrician etc. and reviewed the present status of children.

The team also interacted with the Deputy Commissioner of Dibrugarh. The team had interaction in the similar way in Jorhat District and had a meeting with the Deput Comissioner and Joint director, Health and Family Welfare in Nagaon district.

After taking a stock of the situation of children in covid care centers and hospitals, the team of ASCPCR recommended that the number of ICU for children should be increased in the districts considering the increased number of Covid positive children.

The Commission has also submitted a set of the following recommendations to the to Health and Family Welfare minister keeping in mind the best interest of the children.

-Child-friendly ward for Covid-19 positive children with the arrangement of staying mother or caretaker together to take care of the children.

-Separate wards for covid 19 positive pregnant women and arrangement of separate delivery room for them.

-Disable friendly arrangements for covid 19 positive special children by using of adaptive beds, toilets and other requisites along with provisions for psychological counseling so that children who are admitted in hospital due to COVID-19 can seek mental health support when required.

-Steps should also be taken to ensure that the children who are hospitalized due to COVID-19 are provided with nutritious food and medicines.

-Counseling services should also be provided to mothers, caretakers of children who may be staying with the child admitted in the hospital.

-Setting up of pediatric Covid ICUs in all districts.
