Darrang police arrest 4 teachers in JNV principal assault case

Darrang police on Monday arrested four teachers of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya(JNV) of Udmari for allegedly trying to kill the principal P. Rajesh in the school premises the previous night by assaulting him after tying him to a tree.

The incident was reported on Sunday at Udmari area of Darrang district. A 20 second video of the incident went viral on various social media platforms.

The four accused teachers have been identified as Kaluram Meena, Madanlal Gupta, Navneet Kumar and Manavendra Goswami.

As per the FIR lodged by the Principal P. Rajesh few teachers of the school have tried killing him by tying a rope around his neck the previous night in the school premises.

Following the report, Darrang Police have arrested all the four accused within 24 hours.

Speaking to Newsmove on Monday, Darrang SP Sushanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the arrest of the four accused persons.

“As per the FIR, we have arrested the four teachers and started interrogating them. The principal of JNV P. Rajesh was assaulted by a section of teachers after being tied to a tree with rope,” said Sarma.

When asked about moral policing, the SP didn’t give any specific answer and said that a crime was committed.

Further probe into the case have revealed that the principal have taken strict action against the teachers for not attending regular classes and hence the teachers took that step.

In 2019, P. Rajesh was the only teacher who was selected for National Teacher Award.

He was earlier honoured with National Award for the Best Teacher by the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) for the year 2012.
