A noble initiative by Dr Bhaskar Papukan Gogoi of Dibrugarh saved the life of another doctor. Gogoi managed the Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) to save the life of another doctor.
Speaking to Newsmove, Dr Bhaskar Gogoi said, “A senior of mine who is a COVID warrior tested positive for Covid and went into mechanical ventilation. He needed advanced treatment with ECMO. Now, ECMO is a very very expensive machine and it is not easily available. The COVID warrior had to be shifted but it was very risky given his critical condition. At that moment, I decided to bring ECMO to Assam Medical College and Hospital.”
Bhaskar said, “I tried my best to bring the ECMO machine to Dibrugarh. And with the help of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and a dear brother of mine named Jitumoni Baishya, who is a cardiac anaesthetist at Max Saket, I managed to bring the machine to Dibrugarh.”
“Its very tough to bring the ECMO machine to Dibrugarh but with everyone’s efforts made it possible. I’d like to thank everyone who supported us in this nobel endeavour,” he added.
He further added, “We prevailed upon the manufacturer to rent a ECMO machine. This morning at 4:45 am the machine reached AMCH and the COVID warrior is getting ECMO therapy. Further management decision will be taken by treating doctors in consultation with attendants.”
“In this mission, Ayursundra SuperSpecialty Hospital of Guwahati sent a team of doctors comprising CTVS surgeon Dr Bikash Rai Das and Dr Gagan Deka to put the covid warrior in ECMO. I salute Manoj Kr Deka for all his help,” Dr Bhaskar Gogoi said.
