Lighting strikes amid football match in Chirang: three dead, eight injured

At least three persons died and eight others were injured after a lightning stroke a field in Chirang district of western Assam where villagers had gathered to watch a football match.

This incident happened at Anthaibari under Bengtal revenue circle, about 15 km from district headquarters Kajalgaon where a football match was organised by a local, Maya Club.

The Villagers, who hadn’t have a public gathering in a very long time due to restrictions since April this year after the second wave of COVID-19, had very jovially gathered to witness the football match, a very popular sport in the whole Bodoland Territorial Region when the mishap happened.

Among the deceased, a couple — Mankeshwar Basumatary (45) and his wife Royenti Basumatary (42) — were also stroke down to death almost instantly after the lightning hit. The other deceased has been identified as Dilip Mushahary (39).

Four persons from the eight injured were women. They have been identified as Raman Singh Narzary, Sansowrang Mushahary, Tracy Borgohain, Prakash Mushahary, Sanhina Borgohain, Rita Islary, and Kokila Basumatary.

The injured has been immediately rushed to Kajalgaon hospital and the serious cases has been forwarded to Kokrajhar town, headquarters of BTR, for better treatment.

A pal of gloom has taken over the tinsel village that had shrugged off the horrors of COVID-19 and had gathered around for an exciting match.
