Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday said that divers of Indian Navy, who are engaged in search and rescue operation at the ill-fated coal mine at Sutuga in East Jaintia Hills have been able to spot two bodies.
At least five miners were trapped inside the coal mine at Umpleng under Sutnga Elaka since May 30.
Sangma on Tuesday said the state government is awaiting an official report on the detection of bodies of two miners who were trapped along with three others inside an illegal coal mine in East Jaintia Hills district.
“We have received a preliminary report that they have spotted two bodies but it is yet to be confirmed in writing,” Sangma said.
He said the government is still waiting for an official communication from the deputy commissioner of East Jaintia Hills.
According to him, the navy and other teams are working day and night to rescue the trapped miners.
A multi-agency search and rescue operation is underway to trace and retrieve the bodies of the miners.
