Mizoram witnesses its highest spike after Delta strain of COVID-19 detected

Mizoram, that along with Manipur was recently found with the Delta strain, the third wave of COVID-19, had on Monday also logged its highest ever Covid-19 positive cases.

At a formidable positivity rate of 35 per cent, the state has recorded 662 positive cases out of 1877 samples

The frontier state that shares borders with Bangladesh and Myanmar, with a very small population already has 4 thousand active cases while a total of 17,605 people have been infected l, that means, currently of every 1000 people, 16 are Covid positive.

A medical official said the reason is the mass detection of cases from a rehabilitation centre.

“A mass emergency test was conducted at Thutak Nunpuitu Q3Team (TNT) camp- an orphanage and a de-addiction centre located in Aizawl. The centre also houses a mental ward. Last week, when some campers had finished their de-addiction course, they were tested before being discharged from the centre. When many of these campers tested positive for Covid-19, the Health Minister was immediately informed and the test had begun,” the source said.

On Sunday, a team of doctors and nurses from Trinity hospital, Ebenezer hospital and Aizawl hospital with Covid-19 Medical Operational Team went to TNT and collected 989 samples of which, 528 people tested positive for Covid-19.

“This is a 53.38% positive rate,” Dr. Pachuau Lalmalsawma, state spokesperson on COVID-19 issues said.

From the remaining 865 samples tested through RAT, 129 tested positive for all over the state.

Mizoram had on Sunday reported four cases of the highly infectious variant, also known as B.1.617.2. The Delta variant, at Mizoram capital m Aizawl district. Their samples were sent along with others to the National Institute of Biomedical Genomics in West Bengal.
