F7ormer Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who swore in as Union Cabinet Minister in the first reshuffle since coming to power for the second term under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, gets Aayush, Ports, Shipping and Waterways portfolio.
Sonowal, a former Minister of State in PM Modi’s first term, is the second from northeast India in the reshuffled ministry that had 30 ministers, 45 minister of state and two minister of state with independent charge. The other, Kiren Rijiju from Arunachal Pradesh, who held Sports and Youth Affairs portfolio has been given Law and Justice portfolio.
Sonowal, who held the Sports and Youth Affairs as Minister of State with Independent Charge between (2014-2016), had resigned from his posts to be elected as Assam CM by contesting in 2016 Assembly elections from Majuli constituency.
After, BJP came victorious for the second term in Assam without a CM candidate, Sonowal stepped down despite winning with majority, following a 8-day-long phase of indecision and paved way for Himanta Biswa Sarma as its new CM.
Sonowal has been selected as Rajya Sabha member from Assam, a post that had been vacant after Biswajit Daimary who resigned from the post, contested and won in Assembly elections 2021, and has been selected as the Speaker of Assam Assembly.
This reshuffle, touted to have highest representation from northeast, has also introduced two new faces as Minister of State — Pratima Bhoumik from Tripura and R Ranjan Singh from Manipur — and had retained the existing Minister of State Rameswar Teli from Assam.
Bhoumik, the first from Tripura to get a Cabinet berth, got Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and R Ranjan Singh from Manipur got External Affairs; and Education as Minister of States.
New portfolio had also been added to Teli.
