A pregnant elephant had to lose her life in Kerala due to the sheer act of brutality by humans. Last Wednesday, when a hungry elephant left the forests of the Silent Valley in Palakkad district of the state and roamed about in search of food, a few locals offered her a pineapple filled with crackers.
She trusted the people and without any apprehension ate the pineapple which exploded in her mouth. It eventually led to the tragic death of the elephant together with the child which she was carrying.

Forest officer Mohan Krishnan, who was also a part of the Rapid Response Team to rescue the elephant, wrote on Facebook “She trusted everyone. When the pineapple she ate exploded, she must have been shocked not thinking about herself, but about the child, she was going to give birth to in 18 to 20 months.” The explosion in her mouth was so powerful that her tongue and mouth got badly injured and he elephant moved around in the village in utter pain and agony. All throughout the period, she did not harm anyone, says the forest officer.
“She is full of goodness,” wrote Mr. Krishan in a note, expressing his emotions. To get some relief from the intolerable pain, the elephant went to the Velliyar River, immersing her mouth and trunk in water. Two elephants called Surendran and Neelakanthan were brought to take her out of the river, but she could not be rescued. Finally, on the 27th of May at 4 pm she, along with the unborn baby succumbed to the injuries.
