Review on the benefits of Coconut oil in boosting immunity to fight COVID

-Anindita Das

JAPI (Journal of The Association of Physicians of India), a prestigious medical journal, has published a research paper in its July edition on coconut oil and its benefits associated with the immune system of human beings. According to the study, several aspects of the immune system can be influenced by coconut oil. It is because of its ‘antimicrobial properties’ that coconut oil is considered to be a useful health potion.

The study further says that the presence of “Antibacterial, Antiviral and Antifungal benefits of coconut oil and its metabolites – Lauric Acid, Capric Acid, and Monolaurin” in coconut oil has already been established by various studies. Even almost 4000 years ago the usefulness of coconut oil has been recognized in Ayurvedic medicine. Dr. Shashank Joshi, one of the key authors of the research paper, who is the Dean of Indian College of Physicians; Consultant Endocrinologist at Lilavati Hospital & Research Centre and Bhatia Hospital, Mumbai, says while talking to media that the fact cannot be denied that the people of Kerala have been able to counter COVID in a better way as they consume a lot of coconut oil.

In the present scenario when achieving immunity becomes the precondition to fight COVID, the study on coconut oil carries hope to the people, while on the other hand some medical practitioners do not agree to such premise, and consider it to be baseless.
