Youth dies of alleged police brutality in Nagaon

In what appears to be an instance of police brutality, a youth was allegedly beaten to death on Wednesday evening. It is been alleged that the youth died after a unit of patrolling police hit childrens for playing cricket at Gareki village in Assam’s Nagaon district during the curfew hours.

The youth have been identified as Sohaib Akhtar of Gareki village.

“The youth along with other children were playing cricket in a field at Gareki village. Suddenly, a police patrolling team came and started beating the children. One of them was injured during the clash and died due to injury,” said a villager.

The youth was rushed to Rupahihat hospital for further treatment but he succumbed to injury.

The agitated villagers gheraoed the Rupahihat police station in protest against police brutality and started pelting stones by damaging police vehicles. Rupahihat police resorted to blank firing to disperse the mob from the police station.

“Police brutally beat him with the back of the gun on his head. They were just playing cricket. The youth died due to police brutality. We need justice for him,” said an agitated protester.

Nagaon SP Anand Mishra said, “As per preliminary information the officer in charge of Rupahihat police station received an information that some people are involved in betting and gambling despite curfew. The police team went to the place and the people starting running. During the chase, one of them fell in the pond and died.” Mishra added that investigation was on regarding the matter.
